Ho Chi Minh City downtown sidewalks set for informal food courts

Ho Chi Minh City authorities have announced that impromptu food courts will be set up on sidewalks on two streets to support poor hawkers who often illegally encroach on sidewalks in the downtown area.

The sidewalks identified, on Nguyen Van Chiem Street near Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral and Vo Van Kiet Street near the Thu Thiem Tunnel, are wide, allowing three meters to be earmarked for pedestrians when the plan is trialed next month.

To be open from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. – 1 p.m, there will tap water, trash bins, public toilets, and other facilities besides tax exemption for the eateries.

Tran The Thuan, chairman of the District 1 People’s Committee, said the sellers would be trained in food safety and have to clearly list prices.

The model would be taken to other streets if it proves effective after a month, the People’s Committee said.

Thuan said around 600 hawkers often occupy streets in District 1, threatening traffic safety and giving the city a bad image in the eyes of visitors.
