Hanoi's Noi Bai named among world’s 100 best airports
Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport has been named the world’s most improved airport by Skytrax, a UK-based firm which runs an airline and airport ranking site.
Skytrax on Wednesday revealed the 2016 World Airport Awards, based on the number of votes sent in by travelers in what the company called the largest, annual global airport satisfaction survey.
Noi Bai is named the world's most improved airport, followed by the new Hamad International Airport in Doha and Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
The Hanoi airport jumped 136 spots from 218th place in 2015 to 82th in the world’s Top 100 Airports.
Singapore's Changi Airport has been voted by customers as the World’s Best Airport by air travelers for the fourth consecutive year at the Skytrax 2016 World Airport Awards.
The new recognition is a breakthrough for Noi Bai. In 2014, The Guide to Sleeping in Airports listed Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat, two biggest international airports in Vietnam, among the worst in Asia.
Due to its low ranking, the management of Noi Bai airport issued a public apology and pledged to improve service quality at the country’s second biggest airport.
On December 31, 2014, Noi Bai opened its new US$900 million airport terminal that nearly doubled its original capacity. Two thirds of the fund came from Japanese low-interest loans and the rest came from domestic sources.
The airport had been overburdened for years with only one terminal and a capacity of 12 million annual passengers.
Noi Bai's Terminal 2 is designed to handle 10 million passengers per year and can be expanded to serve 15 million in the future.
