Vietnam—On Its Way to Becoming the World’s Leading Coffee Producer

Vietnam is known as the world’s second largest coffee producing country as well as the number one coffee producer in Asia. However, circumstances have been changing rapidly.

These days, walking around the streets in downtown areas of Vietnam, one can notice some coffee shops springing up with totally different format of the common coffeehouses. A variety of coffees other than Robusta coffee has been already imported and distributed aggressively into the Vietnamese traditional coffee market predominantly centered on heavily roasted coffee and condensed milk. In other words, coffee is selling in a more westernized way that uses espresso machines or coffee brewing gadgets.

Indonesia, another Asian coffee producer, was invited as a guest country to the 28th Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), the largest US and global coffee expo, which was held in Atlanta last month. In addition, the coffee associations from Myanmar and Nepal directly took part in that event to promote their product. This shows the drastic increase in aggressive marketing and promotional activities of neighboring coffee producers. In this term, “specialty coffees” and “single-origin coffees” are the trends in the global coffee industry that Vietnam major coffee players must keep an eye on to develop their market and industry.

Specialty coffee literally means “a special cup of coffee” made with special attention given to the entire process such as selecting soils and climates, cultivation and harvest, roasting, and brewing. The unique flavors and tastes are preferred by coffee lovers. One of the mainstreams of specialty coffees is the single-origin coffee grown within a single known geographic origin. That is, it is not blended with other beans from different region. The most important feature of a single-origin coffee is its unique flavor that represents the corresponding region where it was grown and harvested. Thus, the country of origin is always marked on the single-origin products, which ensures the quality of the product and its producer.

That is the reason that we should focus on “specialty coffees” and “single-origin coffees.” In addition to the improved quality of products achieved through various attempts and efforts, branding is the most influential medium that can trigger the curiosity of rapidly changing global coffee markets. Fortunately, Vietnam is considered a coffee master yet to be discovered by global coffee lovers. This is another reason that we have to further strengthen our national brand: “made in Vietnam.”

The best events for this discussion will be the 1st Vietnam International Cafe Show (Cafe Show Vietnam 2016) which will be held in Saigon Exhibition & Convention Center (SECC), located in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from May 12th to 14th, 2016. Exporum, which will host the Cafe Show Vietnam 2016, announced its aspiration of being firmly established as a representative exhibition and convention organizer in Vietnam, based on its 15-year expertise in hosting the Seoul International Cafe Show in Korea as well as the knowledge attained during its inroads into China for Cafe Show China. Cafe Show Vietnam 2016 will attract the coffee industries from all around the world with its exhibitors from local and global professional coffee industry such as machine, equipment, and gadget manufacturers and relevant companies. They will act as the major driving force of the specialty coffee industry in Vietnam.

The local coffee community welcomed event, Vietnam National Barista Championship (VNBC 2016) will be co-located with Cafe Show Vietnam 2016 to raise the status of the barista as a career through competition between outstanding coffee masters. The domestic café owners and trainers who are the specialty coffee pioneers in Vietnam have already established an operating committee and made every effort to make this competition fair and fruitful. Furthermore, 36 competitors are preparing themselves for their presentation of the best flavors through the optimal coffee and technology at the VNBC 2016. Because VNBC is the only coffee competition sanctioned by the World Coffee Events(WCE) in Vietnam, which means the winner of the VNBC will have an opportunity to enter the World Barista Championship on behalf of Vietnamese coffee and coffee industries.

If you want to know more about current status and the potential of Vietnam’s coffee markets which is now in the transition to a new strategy, visit the Saigon Exhibition & Convention Center (SECC) during 12 to 14 May, 2016. The show will be the perfect momentum to contribute the revitalization of Vietnam’s coffee producers and employees in the coffee industry.
